Choi Kwang Do

30 Years of Choi Kwang Do

Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi started developing Choi Kwang Do over 37 years ago using biology, kinesiology, biomechanics and other scientific principles to create what some feel to be one of the greatest Martial Arts in the world today. While simultaneously being more body friendly to avoid injury and it helps the body to adapt and become stronger. Grand Master Choi introduced the world to Choi Kwang Do  on March 2nd 1987 in Atlanta Georgia then shortly there after in Saline Michigan.

The three pillars of Choi Kwang Do are Optimal Heath, Self Defense, and Personal Development.

Choi Kwang Do consists of 10 components:

1-     Warm up/Cool down

2-     Stretching Exercises

3-     Basic Techniques

4-     Patterns

5-     Speed Drills

6-     Defense Drills

7-     Target Training

8-     Close Range Tactics

9-     Strength and Rehabilitation

10- Character Development

These components work together to build strength, endurance, flexibility, and speed as well as increasing reserve capacity in organs such as the heart and lungs.

Choi Kwang Do training also improves our brain function by abundant blood flow and delivering oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

According to scientists, exercise produces neurotransmitters (such as dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin) Brain- Derived neurotrphic Factor or BDNF – a protein produced inside nerve cells when they are active, it serves as Miracle-Gro for the brain, fertilizing brain cells to keep them functioning and growing, as well as spurring the growth of new neurons. This can improve memory and brain function. More information can be found in the book Spark by John Ratey, MD.
